Associate Professor, History and Political Science
I received my B.A. in history from Mississippi College (1990), M.A. from the University of Southern Mississippi (1995), and Ph.D. from the University of Memphis (2003).
I recently published The Cult of Imperial Honor in British India (Palgrave, 2009), which examines the role of honor in legitimating imperial rule. As a code, honor condoned and sanctioned imperial violence, and attempted to make imperial rule virtuous. Honor therefore disguised the brute force of the British Raj and assured the British of the essential justness of their rule, for they considered most Indians to be wholly devoid of honor.
