If you know the URL of the site you want to visit, type it into NetScape's LOCATION: box above (or, if using Internet Explorer, the ADDRESS: box) and press ENTER to go directly to that site. If you want to search for a topic or site using a search engine, several popular ones are listed below.

   AltaVista
One of the largest search engines on the web, AltaVista is a favorite of serious researchers because of its comprehensive coverage and its wide range of power searching commands. It also offers a simple search mode for basic users.

  Ask Jeeves Inc.
This "natural language" search engine lets you search by asking questions on subjects of every kind.

  Excite
Excite is a very popular medium-sized index. It is very fast and often integrates non-web material such as company information and sports scores into its results.

  Google
One of the newer search engines, Google uses the number of links to a site in ranking its relevancy. It uses an automatic Boolean AND between words and allows the use of a - sign to perform a NOT function. The + can be used but is only useful for forcing a search on a stop word since AND is the default operation.

  Hotbot
Another favorite of researchers because of its large index and explicite Boolean search features, HotBot's advanced search lets you specify date, domain, varying page depth, and even whether a page contains certain types of media.

  Lycos
One of the smaller Web page databases, Lycos offers two levels of searching. Its advanced search features allow proximity, Boolean, and field searching. This is a good place to search for sounds and pictures.

  Yahoo!
Yahoo, one of the most popular search services, has a reputation for helping people find information easily. And, if you don't like Yahoo's results, just click on one of the other search engines at the bottom of the page to have it perform the same search without retyping.
