APPLYING FOR A JOB IN THE LIBRARY Thank you for your interest in working in the library. We are always looking for reliable student workers. JOB COMPETENCIES - You must meet the minimum competencies required of student workers, including: · Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively both in person and over the telephone. · Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and adhere to procedures. · Commitment to providing courteous customer service and a willingness to help others · Basic knowledge of computers, with keyboard skills necessary to complete work in the assigned area(s) of the library · Accuracy and attention to detail. For some jobs, the ability to understand call number sequence when shelving · In some jobs, students must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, including pushing/pulling a fully loaded book cart (xx lbs.), lifting, bending, and reaching to shelve books and materials · Most importantly, dependability and integrity APPLICATION Applicants will be considered based on skills and hours available for work. If you are being considered for a position, you will be called. Applications are removed from the file at the end of each semester. If you wish to be considered for work in the new semester, you will need to resubmit your application. JOB DESCRIPTIONS Some of the areas of employment in the library are: ACQUISITIONS – assist in processing materials to add to the library collection. Stamp books as received prior to being cataloged. Perform other jobs as requested.
CATALOGING – assist in processing materials to add to the library collection. Create, print and apply labels to books. Perform other jobs as requested.
CIRCULATION DESK – assist in circulation of library materials. Provide basic information and directional assistance to library users. Answer the main telephone and refer/transfer to the appropriate person. Assist patrons in the use of the library catalog, MICAL. Perform other jobs as requested.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN – assist in the Interlibrary Loan department. Retrieve books requested by other libraries, locate and photocopy requested journal articles. Package materials for shipping. Perform other jobs as requested.
LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER – assist at the LRC service desk. Check out media materials to patrons using MICAL, the online catalog. Facilitate the use of Reserve materials. Answer the telephone in the LRC. Assist patrons with the copier and basic AV equipment. Shelve LRC materials as needed. Perform other jobs as requested.
PERIODICALS AND COMPUTER TECHNICAL SUPPORT – provide assistance to users regarding basic computer usage. Routine maintenance of printer and copier (i.e. load paper and toner). Reshelve magazines, journals and newspapers as needed. Perform other jobs as requested.
SHELVING - sort and arrange books to be reshelved. At times, assist with maintenance of the library collection by shifting or straightening materials. Perform other jobs as requested. |
