GLOSSARY

 

ACQUISITIONS – the department in the library (main floor, across from elevator) that is responsible for ordering, invoicing, and adding ownership stamps to new materials.

 

ARCHIVES – or MC Room - the area where historical documents relating to Mississippi College and Clinton are kept.  Enter the MC Room through the Special Collections area on the top floor of the library.

 

BAPTIST HISTORICAL COMMISSION – a collection of church records and Baptist history.  Located on the top floor of the library, northwest section.

 

BOOK DROP – There is one book drop located at the main door to the library.  The book drop is for return of materials after hours.

 

BOUND PERIODICALS – or bound journals – issues of a magazine or journal that are bound together, usually including one year or one volume.   Bound periodicals are on the top floor of the library, at the back, and are arranged in alphabetical order.

 

BROWSING AREA - a special location in the library (main floor in the new book display and the walkway to LRC) in which new books, both fiction and nonfiction, are displayed.  Denoted by a BR on the call number.

 

CALL NUMBER – the combination of letters and numbers assigned to an item in the library collection indicating its location in the library.  MICAL is used to look up an item’s call number.  The call number is assigned by cataloging and looks something like this:  372.34 H925g.  The Leland Speed Library uses the Dewey classification system and the Law School Library uses the Library of Congress classification system.

 

CATALOG – The listing of books and other library materials owned by the library.  Journal titles are listed, but journal articles are not in the catalog.  MC’s computerized catalog is MICAL – MIssissippi College Automated Libraries.  MICAL is shared by the Leland Speed Library and the Law School Library.

 

CATALOGING – the department in the library (main floor, northwest corner) responsible for assigning locations and call numbers for library items.

 

CIRCULATION DESK – the desk on the main floor where books are checked out and returned.  It is also where Interlibrary Loan items are picked up and returned.

 

COMPRESSED VIDEO CLASSROOM – Located in the LRC, the compressed video classroom is used to transmit and receive classes via the Internet.

 

COPIERS – the library has 3 copiers in the Speed library.  One is on the top floor of the library and two are in the LRC.  Copies are .10 per copy.  The copiers will give change for a $1.00 bill.  Change is available at the Circulation Desk.

 

CURRENT PERIODICALS – the most recently received magazines and journals.  Current periodicals are located on self service shelves on the top floor of the library, arranged in alphabetical order.

 

DALEHITE CONFERENCE ROOM – The Dalehite Conference Room is a small conference room on the main floor of the library.  It is located on the southwest corner past the men’s restroom. 

 

DATABASES - a database is a collection of information organized by fields.  Databases in libraries are purchased internet resources which include full text journal articles as well as indexing and abstracts.  Databases can be multidisciplinary, such as Academic Search Premier and Academic Universe, or discipline specific such as America: History & Life and Communication and Mass Media

 

DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM – a classification system used by libraries to arrange books by subjects.  Speed Library uses the Dewey system.

 

HOLD – a patron may place a hold on a book that is checked out by someone else.  When the book is returned, the patron will be notified that it is available.

 

ILL or INTERLIBRARY LOAN – If a patron needs a book that is not in the MC Library, the book can be borrowed from another library.  The Interlibrary Loan desk is located at the main Circulation desk in the library.  A patron may request an ILL either in the library or from the library web site. 

 

INDEXES – a print or internet resource used to locate periodical articles, usually by subject or author.  Indexes can be discipline specific (Art Index, Music Index) or multidisciplinary (Reader’s Guide to Periodicals), and cover from the late 1800’s to the present.  Print indexes are on the top floor of the library by the bound periodicals. 

 

JOURNAL – a periodical published several times a year.  “Journal” usually refers to a scholarly publication, with the target audience being specialists in the field and students. 

 

JUVENILE – a special collection in the basement used mostly by students majoring in Education.  The location is designated on the call number by “J”.

 

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER (LRC) – The LRC houses multi media materials and equipment, including DVD’s, CD’s, sheet music, laptop computers, videoprojectors, and more.  Laptop computers, video cameras, and videoprojectors must be reserved before being checked out.

 

LOST AND FOUND – Lost and found items are kept in the storage closet behind the circulation desk.

 

MAGAZINE – a periodical or popular publication whose target audience is the general population.

 

McNet – the MC computer network.  Each student is issued a username and password to access the e-mail and computer network.  The username and password is used to access electronic resources from off campus.  The username and password can be looked up at (https://www.mc.edu/base/StudentRetrieve.php). 

 

MICAL – MIssissippi College Automated Libraries – the online catalog shared by Speed Library and the MC Law Library. 

 

MICROFILM and MICROFICHE – a photographed reproduction of a book, journal or other work reduced to fit on a reel (microfilm) or a sheet (microfiche).  A microfilm/fiche reader is used to magnify the images and print.  Microfilm/fiche and a reader are located on the top floor of the library.

 

MILLENIUM – the system that provides management functions for the library.  The system provides Circulation, Acquisitions, Cataloging, Reserves, Booking modules and more.  Milennium is not available for public use.

 

OVERSIZE – a special location to house books that are too large to fit on normal library shelves.  Oversize is located in the basement close to fiction, and is designated on the call number by “O”.

 

PEER REVIEWED or REFEREED JOURNAL – journal articles that have been submitted for publication and that have been reviewed by an editorial board of experts in the field.

 

PERIODICALS – any publication that comes in periodically, such as newspapers, journals, or magazines.  Periodicals are housed on the top floor of the library.

 

PRIMARY SOURCES – sources that provide first hand accounts of events, usually written at the time the event occurred.  Examples would be diaries, memoirs, letters, published accounts written at the time of the event, photos and videos documenting the event, government records, census data, oral interviews, and artifacts.  Secondary sources are an analysis of events that happened and are created by examining primary sources.

 

QUIET STUDY AREAS – areas where conversation and noise is kept to a minimum to provide a quiet atmosphere for studying.  The Reference Room and areas in the basement are quiet study areas.

 

REFERENCE DESK – the Reference desk is located on the top floor of the library, beyond the public accessible computers.  Reference librarians assist patrons in finding and accessing information and provide classroom instruction on how to use information sources.  The READY REFERENCE area is behind the Reference desk.

 

REFERENCE ROOM – a room on the main floor that houses general encyclopedias, specialized encyclopedias, census materials, literary criticism books and other materials that do not circulate.

 

RESERVES – Library reserves are materials selected by faculty to supplement course requirements.  The intention of course reserves is to ensure that all students enrolled in a specific class have access to required or recommended materials.  Reserve materials shelved in the LRC are generally for use in the library only.  Faculty members also have the option of putting materials on "Electronic Reserve".  These materials may be searched under course reserves in MICAL.  

 

STACKS – the area where the circulating books are shelved, usually the basement

 

STUDY ROOMS – Study rooms are available on the top floor and in the basement on a first come, first served basis. 

 

STYLE MANUAL – a publication which prescribes the proper way to format a paper according to the accepted style of the discipline.  Style manuals such as Publication Manual of the APA, MLA Handbook for Writers, and Chicago Manual of Style are located in Ready Reference.

 

TREASURE ROOM – a special location in the basement that houses items that are old or are of value to the collection.  These items do not circulate, and are designated on the call number by the letter “T”.
