STUDENT WORKER GUIDELINES
Student workers are a vital part of the team at Mississippi College Speed Library, and we hope that your work experience will be rewarding to you. When working in the library, you are a REPRESENTATIVE OF THE COLLEGE. Always be courteous. If you have a question or problem and you are not 100% sure of the correct answer, ask a supervisor. Misinformation can be worse than no information, so do not be afraid to ask when you are unsure of the answer. You are a valuable asset to the library, and we could not operate without your help. Thank you for your contributions!
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT. Student workers are employed on a semester basis. Employment may be continued from semester to semester, provided that your work is satisfactory.
SCHEDULE. Your work schedule will be determined by your immediate supervisor, and may include meetings and training sessions. You must arrive at work on time. If you know in advance that you are unable to work during your scheduled time, you will need to find a substitute for that period. In an emergency or if you are sick, call your supervisor (or the Reference Librarian on duty) as soon as you know you cannot work. Do not leave a message with another student worker. Failure to call can lead to termination! Put the library telephone numbers in your cell phone “contacts” list. Talk with your supervisor if you find that you need to change, decrease or increase work hours. Please give two weeks notice if you need to resign from your job.
WORKING AT NIGHT AND ON WEEKENDS. Nights and weekends are staffed by student workers and the librarian on duty (or the night supervisor if after 10:00 pm). With limited staff, it is crucial that you work your assigned shift. If you are scheduled to work only at night or on weekends and are a new worker, you will at first be required to train/work some hours when your supervisor is present. Be sure you schedule some daytime hours with your supervisor before working at night.
EXAM SCHEDULES. Schedules will be revised during exam periods and you will be given a chance to sign up for alternate work periods. Work hours will be arranged around exam schedules.
FOOD AND DRINKS. Covered drinks and small snacks are allowed in the library. It is unprofessional for you to be working at a public desk while eating food. If your schedule necessitates that you bring your meal or a snack to the library, please be discreet and eat or drink away from the main service desk.
DRESS. Dress appropriately so that users will not be offended and the workplace will not be disrupted. Remember that you are a representative of the college. As such, you are expected to dress, act and work in a manner consistent with a Christian organization.
VISITS/CALLS. Avoid extended personal phone calls (on the library telephone or your cell phone) or visits from friends that would distract from your work. Particularly do not tie up a service desk telephone with personal calls.
EARPHONES. Earphones are not allowed at public service desks, as they distract from providing service to library users.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT. The Mississippi College Library adheres to the campus wide policy on Sexual Harassment & Fraternization (see Policy 3.11 – Sexual Harassment). Report any concerns to your supervisor or directly to the Title IX/EEO Coordinator for Mississippi College, Dr. Debbie Norris.
