Communication Department at Mississippi College Offers Graduate Certificate

Students entering the communications industry can sign up for a new graduate certificate at Mississippi College.

Leaders of the MC Communication Department say the certificate can only boost employment chances and job skills of students in a fast-changing labor market.

“The new program is a good fit for students who will be entering the workforce, but want to continue their education at the graduate level,” says communication professor Reid Vance.

“A certificate program provides students an opportunity to develop relevant skills such as public speaking, writing press releases and working with the media,” adds communication professor Mignon Kucia.

Certification, she says, will set professionals apart from their peers. “It will enhance their career opportunities.”

Students enrolled in the Mississippi College program will take 18 semester hours in classes such as public relations, negotiations, intercultural communication and persuasion. Typically, the certification can be completed within one year. A bachelor’s degree is required for admission.

In addition, credits towards a certificate can be transferred to a master’s communication program at the university. Thirty-one hours are needed for that degree.

The graduate certificate is available to students on the Clinton campus or online.

The MC Communication Department already offers bachelor’s degrees in six concentrations plus an online generalist option and five master’s degrees. For more information, go to communication.mc.edu or call 601-925-3329.
