Mississippi College Spreads Christmas Cheer to Children of Prisoners

Shari Barnes, director of the Community Service Center at Mississippi College, is overseeing the Angel Tree project for her 10th year on the Clinton campus.

Many of the 2.3 million children with parents in America’s prisons will experience little joy during Christmas.

The Angel Tree project at Mississippi College seeks to brighten the holiday season for 130 boys and girls in metro Jackson.

Supported nationwide by Prison Fellowship Ministries, Angel Tree assists some of the children of the 2.3 million men and women incarcerated. The drive in all 50 states also teaches children about the love of Jesus Christ.

Shari Barnes, director of the MC Community Service Center, is overseeing the Angel Tree project for her 10th consecutive year on the Clinton campus.

The annual drive to collect clothes, toys, shoes, books and other items, Barnes said, will support needy children or “angels,” around Central Mississippi.

Typically, that can add up to $50 per-child.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to sign up at the Angel Tree display in the cafeteria at the Baptist-affiliated university.

“Anytime people can take out of their own pockets and help others is always a great humanitarian effort,” says Ivana K. Williams of Brandon, an MC graduate student in social science.

As holidays draw near, many of the children are living with grandparents and other relatives, while one or more parents are behind bars in Mississippi.

The Mississippi College contributions will help children in communities like Clinton, Byram, Crystal Springs, Jackson, Pearl and Brandon, Barnes said.

Adorning the Christmas tree are scores of red cards listing the first names of the kids and their specific needs. Money will also be accepted.

The drive began November 23 as students, faculty and staff get ready to enjoy time with families during the Thanksgiving holidays.

Angel Tree contributions will be collected on the Clinton campus through December 14.
