Bachelor of Science in Biology – Medical Sciences Track
The Biology premedical track at Mississippi College is like no other in the country. We offer a collection of medical school level courses such as Human Gross Anatomy, Medical Physiology, Histology, Neuroanatomy and Pharmacology.
In addition to this, students in the Biology premedical sciences program at Mississippi College are able to take medical school board exams (also called "shelf exams"). These exams, written by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), are taken at the end of each medical school course. Because MC teaches many of our Biology courses at medical school level, the NBME has allowed MC to give those board exams to our students. Top MBME Board scores for MC students are above the 90th percentile. MC's top Gross Anatomy Board score recently was 97th percentile, meaning the MC Gross Anatomy student who achieved that score did better than 97% of medical students across the country who just finished their medical school gross anatomy course.
Since many of the science courses in medical school are very similar to dental school course work, our Biology premed track is fantastic preparation for dental school as well. The Medical Sciences track is also perfect for students wanting to go to Pharmacy School since this track also covers all of your prerequisites for that professional program.
Bachelor of Science in Biology – Research Track
The Biology department has one of the best equipped research facilities for undergraduates in the southeastern United States. Our faculty love to have undergraduate students help them with their research. The research track affords you the opportunity to do research in cancer, virology, molecular biology, field biology and many other areas. Many of our students use their research experience to go on to graduate school to pursue their Ph.D. More information about Biology research at MC.
Bachelor of Science in Biology – Science Education Track
Professional education courses supplement science courses for students pursuing teacher licensure in secondary education, leading to certification in Biology and General Sciences for Grades 7-12.
Bachelor of Science in Biology – General Biology
A strong foundation for a wide variety of careers: physical therapy, pharmacy, physician’s assistant, medical technology and field biology.
The MC Experience
The Department of Biological Sciences is committed to carrying out a greater mission, providing an environment where students can develop emotionally and spiritually as well as academically and intellectually. We strive to provide the best possible scientific education, and a solid foundation for success in professional school, graduate school and postgraduate careers. Our alumni are pursuing prestigious careers in medicine and research, and making a difference as educators and healthcare professionals.
Interested in marine biology? MC students can take a wide selection of marine biology courses and even study marine life in the wild, thanks to a partnership between the Mississippi College Department of Biological Sciences and the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Institute of Marine Sciences.
We offer an excellent internship for students wanting to attend Medical or Dental school. Through our Medical/Dental Alumni Association, qualified students will be able to spend time shadowing physicians and dentists all across the state. These professionals are also Mississippi College alumni who what to help our undergraduate students learn firsthand what it is like to be a physician or dentist.
To know science is to do science and that means learning how to do research. We have a team of researchers who would love to have you in their lab making exciting new discoveries. You will find out what it is like to write research papers, go to scientific meetings, and present your research data.
In 2011, the Department of Biological Sciences sent more than 85 graduates to medical school and dental school. You too can go to medical or dental school, or pharmacy school, graduate school or enroll in our Physician Assistant program at Mississippi College. There is no limit to what you can do with a Biology major.
