The American Chemical Society-accredited curriculum focuses on providing a solid foundation in chemistry, with the flexibility for students to explore their individual interests. Some students plan to apply to professional schools and pursue medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy or allied health professions. Others anticipate further study in the sciences, aimed toward research careers in chemistry or biochemistry. And some will seek secondary education licensure, and become science teachers at the junior high and high school level.
Ideal preparation for students who plan to enter professional school in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or the allied health professions, this track provides a rigorous scientific background that will well prepare you for entry into the medical field.
A strong foundation for pursuing employment immediately after graduation, this curriculum prepares students for entry-level science and technology careers.
Professional education courses supplement science courses for students pursuing teacher licensure in secondary education, leading to certification in Chemistry for Grades 7-12.
With a rigorous curriculum approved by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society, this track provides intensive preparation for the student who desires to pursue graduate work in chemistry, enter the field of industrial chemistry, or study chemical engineering. Mississippi College prides itself on a century-long tradition of providing foundational education in chemistry. Today, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry continues to offer a remarkable education to our talented undergraduates. Our program is fully accredited by the American Chemical Society; in fact MC was the first university in Mississippi to receive ACS certification of its Biochemistry degree, and continues to lead the state in the number of ACS-certified chemistry and biochemistry majors. High-tech lab facilities, an active research program, and a supportive, professional faculty create an environment that pushes students to develop to their full potential. The results speak for themselves. MC Chemistry alumni currently serve on the faculty or administration of 26 colleges and universities in the US, and hold high-level positions with dozens of international corporations and research organizations.
MC Chemistry students benefit from high-tech lab equipment and state-of-the-art facilities, like the NMR laboratory. Designed to be an extremely low-noise facility, it’s located on the ground floor, 10 feet below exterior grade, isolating the space from environmental and traffic vibrations to ensure accurate readings from the spectrometers installed there.

Take part in our student affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society, one of the largest and active in the nation. In fact, our student chemists have received a Chapter Award from the American Chemical Society for several years running.

Dr. Randall Easterling served as the 2009-2010 President of the Mississippi State Medical Association. Mr. David Summers is Director of Global Research and Development for Analytical Sciences at Dow Chemical Company. Dr. Daniel Jones was Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Our alumni have served as directors of research and development at Dow Chemical and Monsanto, the chemical services division of the Texas Department of Health, the fellowships division of the National Science and Foundation, and American Operations at Shell Oil Company. One was the Head of Organic Chemicals at the Environmental Protection Agency. They’ve served on the faculty of dozens of institutions of higher learning, including the Citadel, Georgia Institute of Technology, Texas A & M University, Tulane University, University of California, University of North Carolina and University of Notre Dame.
