Brookhaven M.Ed. Elementary Education Program
Mississippi College Announces M.Ed in Elementary Education in Brookhaven, MS
Mississippi College leaders plan to offer a master’s in education in Brookhaven beginning this fall, and have submitted the proposal for approval from SACS.
The Master’s of Education in Elementary Education is a 30 semester hour program which leads to an AA license endorsement in Elementary Education. In addition to the university requirements for graduate school, applicants for this program must hold a current class A educator license in Elementary Education, and have a degree in Elementary Education.
The programs offered by the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership at Mississippi College are accredited by the Mississippi Department of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, which is transitioning to the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation.
The courses in the M.Ed. program can currently be taken as a mixture of online, hybrid and traditional classes. For the Brookhaven area, we propose a mixture of 50% traditional brick and mortar classes offered onsite in the Brookhaven area (5 classes, 15 hours), and 50% of the classes to be taken online (5 classes, 15 hours) through MCMoodle. The five traditional courses are well established and taught by our faculty and long-time adjuncts, and the 5 online courses have been developed and in use for several semesters already. This schedule would provide a consistent faculty contact and advising with the Brookhaven cohort each semester, as well as allow for flexibility through the availability of online classes.
Candidates in this program could complete the requirements in four semesters, as shown above in the suggested class rotation chart. Candidates who are employed as full-time teachers are also eligible for a 30% reduction in tuition through the Professional Development Scholarship offered at MC.
