Mississippi College

John D. Hunt

Motto: If you are not having fun teaching, then your students are not having fun learning!

My life's journey began in China. I was born in Wuhu and attended a missionary boarding school in Kuling, China. My parents and teachers instilled in me a love of God, a love of children, a love of teaching and, in particular, a love for science. My first form teacher, Mrs. Houghton, encouraged me to love nature! I was, and still am, called to be a science teacher!   My formal education continued in England and Canada and while I was in grade thirteen in Manitoba, Canada, I won a track scholarship to Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. I studied biology to become a teacher. I had taught K- college level classes for over 43 years in the United States and Germany before arriving at Mississippi College in 2002.  After 55 years of teaching,  I still love God, working with children, and teaching science.  I try to instill this passion for teaching in my teacher - candidate students at Mississippi College so they can instill these same values in their students. For the past fifteen years in addition to teaching at MC, I have had the opportunity of serving 50,000 students in grades 3-8 and 5, 000 parents with STEM - based physics through Science Fun Days. This experience and a grant from a local foundation led to the development of a new STEM institute at Mississippi College. I now serve as education director of this STEM institute in addition to teaching my classes.

My research interests are:

* Differentiated Instruction (D.I.),
* Understanding by Design (UbD),
* Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and
* Thinking - Design Model Learning.

Welcome to my page! I hope you will enroll in one of my classes where we will have fun learning together!
