Time to Register - Mississippi College Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center with ALTA, MS Chapter Fall Dyslexia Conference - September 29 and 30, 2022
The Mississippi College Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center will be conducting their third joint two-day dyslexia conference with the MS Chapter of ALTA (Academic Language Therapy Association), “Let Your Dreams Soar”, on September 29 and 30, 2022.

As in years past, the conference will be held in Anderson Hall of the BC Rogers Building on the Mississippi College campus. Registration will begin at 7:15 am with the program to begin at 8 am each day. The conference is open to all interested individuals: academic language therapists, educators, administrators, college students, and parents to come learn about best practices when working with students who have language learning differences and other learning disabilities.

On Thursday, the Mississippi College Dyslexia Education and Evaluation Center welcomes Dr. Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan, Ed.D., CCC/SLP, CDT, CALT, QI, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Cárdenas-Hagan is a bilingual speech and language pathologist, certified dyslexia specialist, certified academic language therapist, and a qualified instructor. Dr. Cárdenas-Hagan is the President of the Valley Speech Language and Learning Center in Brownsville, Texas and a research associate with the Texas Institute for Measurement, Evaluation and Statistics at the University of Houston. She will speak on the topic of Structured Literacy for English Learners: What Every Educator Should Know.
Additional sessions on Thursday will include Dr. Antonio Fierro, Chief Academic Advisor for Tools 4 Reading, speaking on Sounds Walls: A Fun Way to Help Tell a Word’s Story; Dr. Twila Rawson discussing the Effects of Anxiety and Stress on the Mental Health of Today’s Children; Mrs. Kari Grillis East presenting The 411 on Dyslexia and Numbers – Basics of Dyscalculia; Mrs. Laurie Weathersby and Mrs. Jayda Brantley from MDE meeting in small groups for question and answer sessions; Mrs. Meredith Jierski presenting The Magic of Movement for Student Success; Dyslexia Simulations led by Mr. Tim Busch; Mr. Jason Hooper discussing Supporting Dyslexia While Teaching Writing; and Mrs. Teresa Mosley speaking on Executive Functioning and Dyslexia.

On Friday, the MS Chapter of ALTA welcomes as keynote speaker, Dr. Vennecia Jackson, MD. She is the Director of Diagnostic Services at the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children and staff developmental pediatrician since 1994. Dr. Jackson will present The Tie That Binds and Separates: Dyslexia and Inattention Problems.
On Friday additional sessions will include Spotlight on Dyslexia – A presentation made to the Alaska Reading Symposium by Mrs. Jayda Brantley and Mrs. Laurie Weathersby, MDE and Mr. Mark Weakland discussing Practical Techniques, Activities, and Strategies Supportive of Therapy and Useful in Classrooms.
Registration Information
For this two-day conference, all registration and payment will be made through Mississippi College. Cost of the conference is $100 for Thursday, September 29; $100 for Friday, September 30; and $175 for both conference days. Registration includes meal tickets for lunch in the MC cafeteria directly below the meeting rooms.

ALTA CEUs are available to ALTA members free of charge.
1.0 CEUs (for both day’s attendance or 0.5 CEU for each individual day) are also available from the Mississippi College, Office of Continuing Education, for a separate payment of $10 for CEUs (exact cash, checks, or money orders made payable to Mississippi College). The cost is the same for both days or either individual day. Purchase orders and other forms of payment will not be accepted for CEUs.
