Cake, cards, breakfast, gridiron tilt part of Mississippi College’s weeklong celebration of veterans
On Veterans Day 2024, Mississippi College will begin a weeklong salute to those on campus and in the Clinton community who have served our nation.
Veterans Week at MC will include a “Cake and Cards” event on Monday, Nov. 11, a “Veterans Breakfast” on Tuesday, Nov. 12, card-signing opportunities for students throughout the week, and a special veterans recognition during the Choctaws’ final home football game against Gulf South Conference-rival Delta State on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Teresa Hill, coordinator of special populations and veteran school certifying official in the Office of the Registrar at MC, said Veterans Week seeks to engage students and involve every department on campus.
“Veterans Day touches all our lives,” Hill said. “We enjoy securities, freedoms and liberties because of the sacrifices made by veterans in service to our country. We also acknowledge current-day service members, each of whom are worthy of recognition and gratitude.”
The week kicks off with the “Cake and Cards” event from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, in front of the Caf. All MC faculty, staff and students are invited to enjoy refreshments and sign thank-you cards to local veterans.
The cards will be distributed to veterans attending the “Veterans Breakfast” at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Alumni Hall. Sponsored by MC’s Turning Point USA chapter and local restaurant Jamie’s in Clinton, the meal is free to veterans and current service members. Non-military members can purchase a breakfast plate for $7.
Hayden King, a 2023 MC graduate pursuing a master’s in athletic administration and TPUSA student president, said proceeds from the breakfast will support the chapter’s future events that benefit MC students, the community, and local veterans.
“Celebrating veterans at Mississippi College is essential because it reflects our values and identity,” King said. “Our veterans have given so much – some, even their lives – to protect our nation. They deserve the highest respect, recognition and appreciation we can offer.”
Throughout the remainder of the week, MC faculty, staff and students can write messages of thanks for local veterans at a card-signing table in the Caf.
Veterans Week at MC will culminate with the Choctaws football game at noon on Saturday, Nov. 16, in Robinson-Hale Stadium. Representatives from the Mississippi Army National Guard will be in attendance and veterans will be recognized during pregame festivities.
MC is committed to honoring our U.S. Armed Forces student veterans, current service members, veteran dependents and survivors with veteran-focused educational and student support services.
