Carefully curated resource housed at Mississippi College offers insight into Christianity’s rich history

A new authoritative resource that expands knowledge of Christian history and elevates worship for individuals of faith is now available at Mississippi College.

The Center for Christian History at MC offers scholarly works and other curated content to illuminate the rich tapestry of Christian history and provide an unbiased look at the events, figures and movements that have shaped the faith for centuries.

“This is a resource for those who would like to dig deeper into Christian history and use that knowledge in a way that helps in their own sanctification, helps them worship, and increases their understanding of what it means to be ‘salt and light,’” said Nick Walters, executive director and founder.

In July, Walters signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mississippi College that established the center’s affiliation with the Christian University. In October, the center will host their first public event.

A “History of the Protestant Bible” course is scheduled from 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, and from 8:30 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Oct. 5, in Anderson Hall East in the B.C. Rogers Student Center at Mississippi College. The course will address liturgical questions, such as why there are differences between the Protestant Bible, the Roman Catholic Bible and the Orthodox Bible.

“We will discuss the history of how the Protestant Bible came together,” Walters said. “Why are some books included, and others aren’t? Why does Henry VIII’s love life have anything to do with the Bible? We will look at how certain events played out in history and how God’s sovereign hand was involved.”

Walters, also an adjunct faculty member in the Department of History and Political Science at MC, will be the featured speaker. Admission is free and continuing education credit is available.

The Center for Christian History includes a vast online catalog – more than 90 percent of its resources are digital. Online resources include a variety of works, from a daily snapshot of historical events, webinars, and seminars. An online Encyclopedia of Christian History is scheduled to go live in the spring of 2025. The encyclopedia will serve as a trusted resource for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of Christianity’s rich and diverse past. Physical volumes are located in Jennings Hall Annex 111.

Walter’s objective is to develop the ultimate resource for individuals seeking to learn more about any aspect of Christian history and how that information can benefit them in their own spiritual lives.

“Not only is this my alma mater, it’s where I teach,” he said. “The college is unabashed about its vision to be a university known for its academic excellence and commitment to the cause of Christ. Its academic standards ensure that we would not create a center that was only halfway done. We are fully committed to this project.”
