Swingle Singers Booked For March 3 Mississippi College Concert

The Swingle Singers

The Swingle Singers, an internationally celebrated group of a cappella singers, will make its Mississippi College debut with a March 3 concert on the Clinton campus.

The concert is set for 7:30 p.m. that Thursday at Swor Auditorium.

Based in London, the Swingle Singers have won five Grammy Awards since their launch in 1963. The talented eight-member group has performed across the United States, the United Kingdom, Asia and in almost every country in Europe over the last four decades.

Their repertoire stretches from classical music to jazz, from Latin to rock and pop, all accompanied by their own vocal rhythm section.

The Mississippi College Department of Music is sponsoring the event as part of the inaugural James S. Sclater Chamber Series named for the retired MC professor and award-winning composer from Clinton.

“How often will Mississippi College and Clinton have the opportunity to host a five-time Grammy-winning group like the Swingle Singers?” says MC Music Department Chairman James Meaders. “This concert is a rare opportunity for our campus and community to witness the extraordinary talents of a world-renowned group,” he said.

Since making its splash on the musical scene in London, the Swingle Singers have released over 50 recordings. After its MC concert, the group will appear March 4 at the University of Alabama-Birmingham before putting on shows in Lisbon, Portugal on March 10-11. Then, they hit the road for a March 18 concert in London and a performance in New York City March 26. The Swingle Singers were among the headliners at the London A Capella Festival in January.

MC music professor Carol Joy Sparkman raves about the young singers, four men and four women from England. “The Swingle Singers perform music that appeals to all generations,” she said. “From classical music to the Beatles to featured spots on the hit TV show Glee, this concert will be sure to entertain every listener.”

Ticket prices are $25 at the door for the general public. Student ticket prices are $10. “That’s less than a movie and popcorn,” Sparkman said of the student prices.
