Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Benefits MC School of Nursing
Countless Mississippi College students are able to attend the School of Nursing because of a scholarship they receive from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation.
The foundation has been changing lives for decades, supporting students studying to become nurses and the patients and families who receive care from MC graduates.
Dr. Kimberly Sharp, dean of the school, said MC leaders are grateful for the partnership with the foundation.
“We are very grateful for the Lettie Pate Whitehead support,” Sharp said “Every year, I submit a report on activities in the School of Nursing and how the investment is being used to support the work of the school.
“The vast majority of our nursing students work many hours to pay for their studies. Many have families to care for, and some have multiple jobs to keep things going at home. Financial assistance is tremendously important for students who are passionate about nursing but do not have the resources to move ahead with their studies.”
The LPW Foundation was chartered in 1946 for the “aid and benefit of poor and deserving Christian girls and women” in nine Southeastern states. The foundation is the legacy of Lettie Pate Whitehead who inherited and ran a multi-million-dollar business upon the death of her husband.
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation continues to provide scholarship funds to educate women. The foundation’s scholarship program awards annual scholarships to more than 170 students. Mississippi College students benefit from the generosity of this foundation every year and MC administrators are grateful for the continued support.
