Director of Social Studies Education and Assistant Professor - Department of History
The Department of History and Political Science at Mississippi College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position to direct the Social Studies Education program and teach History courses, beginning in the Fall 2025 semester. The successful applicant will have a degree in either Social Studies Education, History, History Education or a related educational field. Ph.D. or Ed.D preferred, though open to ABD candidates. A candidate with a Master's degree in History or Social Studies Education will be considered for a non-tenure track Instructor position. Teaching experience at the secondary level is required, while a teaching license and/or experience working with student teachers would be a plus.
The Social Studies Education program director will teach Social Studies Methods, Geography, and History courses. The successful candidate will also supervise student teachers in cooperation with K-12 teachers in schools across the Jackson metro area. The program director will train students in pedagogy, work with colleagues in the Department of Teacher Education & Leadership, write reports for state and national accreditation, and collaborate with regional organizations. Other faculty responsibilities include a normal teaching load of four courses per semester, student advising, participation in departmental, college, and university governance structures, and active involvement in scholarly activities.
