Mississippi College offers many fun events on campus, from pop-up events, to tribe/club parties, but what about off campus? If many of you are like me, you are not originally from the Jackson area and finding new things to do can be challenging right now. But here are 5 things to do around the Clinton/Jackson area ranging from indoor events to outdoor nature experiences. All of the things listed below are fairly affordable or even free!
1. Live Music at M7
One to two weekends a month, Ridgeland’s very own coffee house host live music featuring various artist (some are even our very own students and alumni). You can gather up a few friends and head over for coffee, music, and tons of fun. M7 also puts in extra efforts to ensure safe social distancing while also allowing for friends and family to come together and enjoy a night out!

2. Mississippi Museum of Natural Science
The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is a fun way to explore the history and wildlife of Mississippi. There are both indoor experiences, such as walking through exhibits and viewing several live reptiles and fish, and outdoor experiences such as hiking the trails. Just be sure you call ahead and make your time reservation. To keep everyone safe a reservation and mask are required. And once you are inside; your inner child can come out and let the adventure begin.

3. Ross R. Barnett Reservoir
In the mood for the great outdoors? Then look no farther! The Ross R. Barnett Reservoir, known to most students as “The Res.” The Res definitely has the most breath-taking views on our list. It is the perfect place for a (socially distanced) picnic, hammocking with a good book, or even a short walk near the water. Another plus? Since you are outside you do not have to wear a mask, just be sure to keep 6 feet apart from other visitors.

4. Mississippi Museum of Art
Now for one of my personal favorites. The Mississippi Museum of Art is another fun yet educational way to spend a day off. The museum not only has its own permanent exhibit but also has various traveling shows. Right now, they are currently house an impressionistic exhibit featuring artist such as Van Gough, Monte, and Degas. And after you are finished walking through the galleries, you can take a stroll through their beautiful gardens. Mask are required to enter the museum and a short wait period is sometime in place to make sure there are not too many people in the gallery. Also don’t forget your student i.d. The museum also offers student discounts!!

5. Clinton Community Nature Center
Last but not least, we have another nature experience. Plus, it’s only a 5-minute drive from campus! Once you arrive you can choose a trail to walk down or stop and smell the flowers, literally. The Clinton Community Nature Center is a calm and relaxing way to get away from campus without having to go so far.
