Living in a freshman dorm is a different experience for freshman females than it is for freshman males. Typically, male dorm rooms may lack the cohesiveness of a female dorm room, without the matching throw pillows and aesthetic color palette, but guys plan for comfort and functionality, which still means planning ahead! Guys may not be known for overpacking, but I encourage you to consider the following advice.
First, I would advise them to invest in quality pieces, such as a memory foam mattress topper or a futon couch. Storage items like desk toppers and shelves are also helpful. If you plan to live in the dorms all four years of school, these pieces will be a worthy investment.
Second, evaluate your daily routine. Do you go to the gym every morning? Pack your gym bag, gym clothes, and workout shoes. Do you play spike ball with your friends? Bring it with you. Do you like to cook? Don’t forget to bring those materials. (Stores like Target and Walmart have low-cost options for dorms.) Try to plan what you pack around what you use each day.
Third, try to make your room a space you enjoy. Pack some picture frames and a poster or two - make the room yours! Sure, you probably won’t be in your room all day, but you want it be a place you enjoy retreating at the end of each day.
We are excited to welcome you to campus in a few short weeks! Happy packing, Choctaws!
Sincerely, MC
