Many girls jump head first into dorm preparations and decor, coordinating with their future roommate and finding the perfect pieces to complete their new space. I would wager that most incoming freshman females, including myself, have a tendency to overestimate what they will need. For me, this led to bringing a lot of unnecessary items that went unused, taking up space and collecting dust in drawers. As an incoming sophomore, I have three pieces of advice to offer freshman females when packing for their first semester.
Firstly, try to condense your closet as much as possible. I would suggest bringing only your favorite items (ex: the sneakers you wear everyday or athletic shorts you throw on for a quick outfit). Most of the time, you will just need casual clothes (whatever that looks like for you). Other than that, I would suggest having four or five “cute outfits” on standby. These can be worn to church services, tailgates, and/or rush events.
One of the most common items people forget is their rain jacket, and one of the most common items people overpack are t-shirts. Trust me, you do not need to pack a lot of shirts from home - you will be given a lot of new shirts.
Secondly, pack your toiletries, makeup, and hair tools according to your bathroom set-up. If you are living in Quick Hall, you will have a private bathroom. This allow for more permanent storage and set-up. If you are living in Whittington Hall, you will share a communal bathroom, meaning you will need to transport some of your toiletries to and from the bathroom on your hall. Assess your set-up and brainstorm how you can make it work for you and your routine.
Thirdly, try not to “fill” your room. You will live in this space for a year, and you will likely add to the space over that time. Leave yourself room to make new memories and
grown into the space throughout the year. Keep in mind, whatever you bring into the room eventually has to be moved out.
We are excited to welcome you to campus in a few short weeks! Happy packing, Lady Choctaws!
